Eric and I toured Timpanogos Cave in Mount Timpanogos, Utah. To get to the cave, we had to walk up a steep 1 1/2 mile trail. It was a 1,092-foot climb. I felt nauseous during the last part of the hike due to the high elevation. But I felt better once we got to the top and out of the sun.
Timpanogos Cave is in reality three exquisitely beautiful limestone caves connected together. Many of the passageways are so tight that it is extemely difficult not to touch the sides or top of the cave, despite our tour guide's warning not to do so.
Stalactites are cave formations that form on the ceilings of caves. They look like icicles. Stalagmites are cave formations found on the floor of caves. They grow upward toward the stalacites hanging from the ceiling When the two join, they form a single pillar or column reaching from the floor to the ceiling. Helictites, like stalactities, start out as tiny stalactites, but instead of growing straight down, they twist and turn in multi-directions.
