Yoga Hike: March 13, 2010

Eric and I went on a hike at Edgewood Park. The park was muddy from having rained the whole week before and poison oak was everywhere. It was definitely the predominate plant at the park that day. At one point, there was a natural fence made of poison oak on the sides of the trail and streams of water running down the trail. I had trouble staying on the trail due to all the mud and kept bumping into the poison oak. And yet, I still had fun. There was something interesting about hiking in a park that I had already hiked in before and experiencing very different conditions.

Eric and I hiked up the mountains, and then I did some yoga at the top while Eric took photos. Doing yoga outside was not at all like I had imagined it to be. I thought it would be serene and relaxing. I've been told that that there is a great feeling to doing yoga outside under the sun as opposed to doing yoga at the gym or even in a yoga studio. Plus, I've been seeing a lot of yoga photos lately in the media that show Yogis and Yoginis doing Yoga outside. The Yogis and Yoginis look so calm and peaceful. I know, many of these photos are actually taken in a studio, and the nature scenes are added afterward. But it still looks so serene.

Anyway, I got my first taste of what it is like to do yoga outside. And let me tell you, the ground was bumpy and slanted, sticks put holes in my mat, there was small animal poo everywhere, I got sun in my eyes when I laid on my back, and the wind kept knocking me down when I tried to do balancing poses.

At the moment, I'm at a loss as to why people like to do yoga outside. I haven't given up though, I'm thinking of joining a yoga hiking group to see whether or not I'll have a better experience.
